Why Food Rescue?
According to Feeding America, 171,660 people in Allegheny County are food insecure, 43,090 of whom are children. There are many strong initiatives in our region whose mission is to alleviate hunger and facilitate access to those in need—from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to urban garden programs to farmer’s markets that accept SNAP/EBT. However, there is still much to be done.
On the other side of the problem is the fact that, on average, 40% of all our food is wasted—this translates to 20 pounds of food per person per month worth $165 billion a year. According to the National Resources Defense Council, over 50% of produce and almost 40% of grains is wasted.
412 Food Rescue's mission is to prevent viable food from entering the waste stream, rescuing food from retailers that is healthy and fresh, but unsellable and deliver it where it can help fill the gap experienced by so many of our neighbors.
Our corps of #foodrescueheroes give their time and resources to transport food between our donors and nonprofit partners. From March 2015 to July 2016, over 625,000 pounds of healthy food has been rescued from going to landfills to feeding those who are hungry.
Join the 412 Food Rescue 2017 Pittsburgh Marathon Team and be part of the solution to end waste and end hunger.
