The Devastating Situation in Iran
On Saturday, August 11th, two strong earthquakes measuring 6.3 and 6.4, struck the northwestern region of Iran near the towns of Ahar and Tabriz. According to the most recent reports, the earthquakes have claimed the lives of over 300 individuals, injured more than 5,000, and displaced over 50,000. In addition, 130 villages have been completely destroyed as a result of the disaster.
It is no secret that relations between the United States and Iran have been rapidly deteriorating for the past several years due to disagreements about Iran’s nuclear program. But it is also no secret that the US is always first to step up and support a country at its darkest hour, despite their current political relationship. The US is by far the world’s largest donor in terms of humanitarian aid, and this is something to be extremely proud of.
On August 22nd, the Obama Administration and the US Department of Treasury issued temporary general licenses to NGOs that will permit them to raise money to put toward on-the-ground relief efforts. Up until now, it was nearly impossible for Americans to donate and for organizations to deliver critical aid to Iran. Thanks to the temporarily lifting of these obstacles, Americans are now free to contribute to earthquake relief efforts in Iran, knowing that the money will directly assist victims of the disaster. This decision sends an extremely positive message to the Iranian people and the rest of the world, that in times of crisis, humanity trumps politics. And that is exactly the way it should be.
Here’s the catch: These licenses are valid for 45 days, meaning that we only have until October 5th to raise money for this cause. We are partnering with the Pars Equality Center and Relief International, both organizations with a trusted presence in Iran. Donations will fund emergency tents & supplies, protecting survivors from night chills. The organization is also providing library kids to teachers in the camps in order to ensure that education continues.
We need your help!
And here’s the best part: With every dollar that you donate, Pars Equality Center will match your donation. Ultimately, the goal of this campaign is to raise $10,000 for earthquake relief efforts in Iran. In these crippling conditions, a small donation can go a long way.
Thank you so much for all of your support!
