BENEFITING: DIGNITAS PROJECT
EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2012
As many of you know, I’m running the Baltimore Marathon on October 13th.
I was in the middle of doing a long training run several weeks ago and was struggling to finish. As I was looking for inspiration I thought of our friend Dalina who is battling cancer. Her attitude and courage in the face of this struggle gave me the strength to go on.
While finishing the last few miles that day I decided that I wanted to dedicate the marathon to Dalina AND to use this opportunity to raise money for a cause that meant something to her.
When discussing this idea with Dalina, she mentioned the area of Mathare, which is a informal settlement (slum) in Naraobi, Kenya. (Dalina spent several years teaching in Kenya)
As I searched for organizations that worked in this area of Kenya I came upon the Dignitas Project. They are a non-profit that works for community development through education in the Mathare Valley. What impressed me about them is that they are developing existing resources, and not just creating dependency.
I know this is a probably a backwards way to raise money, but if you know me at all, that’s how I roll. My goal is to raise $100 a mile or $2,620.
So please, if you can, give to this project. I know together we can make a difference.
