4kers for Kidneys
In November of 2015, John P. Carey, my grandfather, was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, a very aggressive form of kidney cancer. Within a few short months, in the early hours of December 31st, he passed away after a brief, albeit courageous, battle with the disease. He was known as a loving and jubilant man by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Always deflecting attention to others, his humble nature was eager to listen and quick to praise, his infectious positivity warming the hearts of those around him.
Beginning on August 7, 2016, I will attempt to summit the 67 New England 4kers in under a week, thus setting the record for the fastest ascent of these mountains. The New England 67 consist of all of the mountains in New England standing at 4,000 feet or higher and have a prominence of at least 200 feet from col to summit. Colloquially, they are known as 4kers. A token accomplishment in the hiking community, hikers aim to summit these mountains over the course of a lifetime, rarely in a single season. Currently, no record stands for the fastest ascent of the NE67. Click here to learn more about the NE67.
I am embarking on this endeavor as a commemoration of my grandfather’s life. Throughout his life, my grandfather was always very active, from jumping out of planes in the army to frequently biking in his later years. Some, if not most, will think this is a crazy endeavor, but I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honor my grandfather’s memory than by doing something that requires the energy and enthusiasm he possessed.
I have partnered with Baystate Regional Cancer Program and Baystate Medical Center, located in Springfield, MA. Throughout his career as a physician, my grandfather served as an instructor for many years at Baystate. Through 4kers for Kidneys, I aim to fundraise $10,000, supporting those currently battling all cancers as well as promoting continued research and prevention.
I will be assisted by a group of wonderfully generous individuals, who are willing to give up a week of their busy lives to make this trek possible. Many preemptive thanks to Kevin Thompson (my twin), Lexi Schneider, Ali Grise, Ryan Darrow, Marissa Schneider and Colin O’Neill.
