THE STORY:

Dear friends, The journey through medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine has been incredible.  There have been lots of highs and lots of lows; but through it all, I never lost my sense of commitment to the community around me.  I entered VCU SOM thinking that I wanted to be a family medicine physician because of its similar commitment to population health and adjusting the social determinants of health.  Making my way through the first two years of training, I served in CARITAS clinics for the homeless in Richmond and in clinics at the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services.  Third year left little time for me to volunteer; and as I wrestled with which medical specialty to choose as my third year ended, I found that Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) with its emphasis on a patient's function and its ability to work with a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and social workers would be the best fit for me.  However, now as I make this pivot in specialty, I still want to be an advocate for my patients outside the confines of the hospital and ensure that they are leading healthy, productive, joyful lives. Thanks to Dr. William McKinley, the residency program director for PM&R at VCU, I learned about Sportable, Richmond's own adaptive sports organization for athletes who are physically disabled or visually impaired. Sportable provides a range of sporting opportunities from cycling to tennis, from lacrosse to archery, from wheelchair basketball to swimming for its athletes at a number of partner sites throughout Richmond. Thanks to VCU's International, Inner City, and Rural Preceptorship Program, I was able to spend a month-long internship with Sportable under the guidance of its Operations Director, Cat Anthony.  I volunteered at wheelchair basketball practices at St. Christopher's and represented Sportable at a number of resource fairs across the greater Richmond area.  Witnessing the good that this organization does for this particular community touched my heart, and I wanted to give back to the community whom I will serve as a resident physician. Before medical school, I was an endurance athlete, completing multiple marathons and several ultramarathons.  Seeking to re-claim this aspect of my life and benefit my patients, I am joining Sportable's Army of Orange by running the Monument Valley 50 Miler to raise funds for Sportable's athletes.  The preparation for the race will require a lot of early morning runs and a number of long runs reaching upwards of 40 miles.  The race itself will be run in the desert with the weather being frigid in the morning and boiling hot come midday.  However, I know that my sacrifice will be worth it for Sportable's athletes who want so desperately to do what we all want to do -- play and compete.  Please join me in raising funds for Sportable's athletes so that they can lead health, productive, fun, joyful lives! Thank you for your support! Best, Michael P.S.
