EVENT DATE: Oct 01, 2011
HOURS PLEDGED: 350
I'm on the Board of Directors of an amazing organization, and it's about time I got my hands dirty! Or wet, as it were...
From October 1 to October 31, 2011, I will run, swim, and bike a total of 500km to raise money to help LGBTI refugees escape persecution. Please support!! Pledges will go to ORAM (the Organization for Refuge, Asylum and Migration), whose mission is to advocate for refugees fleeing sexual or gender based violence. I would not run 500km if I didn't have utmost confidence in the work we're doing (trust me).
When in San Francisco this past July, I had the chance to hear some of our clients' stories. The two men (from Uganda and Iran, respectively) who spoke were shockingly brave and had both faced harrowing escapes from life-threatening conditions. Hear Danny Dyson, a former client of ORAM, talk about his experiences here:
ORAM does AMAZING WORK to help change not only individuals' circumstances, but also adjust the posturing of the UNHCR and other institutions. LGBTI individuals face systemic hurdles in the refugee process, including abuse and lack of basic understanding of issues around sexual orientation in receiving countries. ORAM has made meaningful interventions in the way that LGBTI refugee claims are handled in the United States, Turkey, and Europe, for example.

(And I plan to document this process with pictures of me collapsed in various parts of London, just so you have some quality assurance. Remember, you have until the end of October to donate!)
