BENEFITING: BITE ME CANCER
EVENT DATE: Jun 19, 2016
What started off as a Father's Day present to my dad turned out to be something that I would completely fall in love with - running. This June, I am doing my very first 5K in honor of the 5th anniversary of my foundation, Bite Me Cancer. Being someone who used to hate running, I am humbled and amazed at how my body has transformed these past few months. Running every day or so, pushing myself, etc. I truly never thought I would be able to accomplish what I have done so far and be able to feel that "runner's high" that people so often refer to.
To give a little background info - I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in April 2010 and had my first extensive surgery in May 2010. Since then I've had many surgeries, treatments, etc. - but I am very optimistic and have been recently declared stable! Around that time I started my foundation - Bite Me Cancer, which supports teenagers battling all cancers and raises funds for Thyroid Cancer research.
In July 2014, I found out that the cancer had spread to the lower left lobe of my lung. After many tests, it was determined that I had to have lung surgery; and I had to prep for at least 30 days prior to strengthen my lungs by doing cardio one hour every day. This prep was my intro to running. Unfortunately, that September surgery was unsuccessful and nothing was removed. In October 2014, I had to start an oral chemotherapy treatment - this involves taking 2 pills of chemo every day with no ending date. Luckily, my side effects have been bearable and my counts have shown a LOT of improvement!
Now, running without the full use of your lungs is a challenge to say the least, but I am continuously amazed at what my body can handle with a push of passion and motivation. Finally, I have to give a Father's Day gift shout out to my dad. He's been the one inspiring me the whole time to keep running, keep going, and reach my goals. I surprised him by signing us up for a 5K, and I couldn't be more excited to experience my first (of many) races with him! My fundraising goal for my first 5K is $5,000. $5,000 for 5 years, and more years to come! Please help me reach my goal!
