5CITIES HOMELESS COALITION

Resources, Support, Hope

Strengthening the South County community by mobilizing resources, support and hope for the homeless and those facing poverty.

The 5Cities Homeless Coalition is bringing resources, support and hope together to help solve the challenges of homelessness faced by our South County neighbors. The Coalition is working with service providing organizations, the faith community, service groups and community leaders to assess current services, and opportunities for collaboration to provide for immediate needs (not currently being met) that lead toward self-sufficiency. Much of our work involves identifying the challenges homeless families and individuals face, their underlying causes and the gaps in current services. The programs we are initiating are the result of this planning effort.

Current programs include:

Envisioning a Warming Center:

The Coalition is working to create a winter warming center to provide a safe, warm and dry place for those who are homeless to find shelter during especially stormy nights.  With the support of the County of San Luis Obispo a location has been secured to open this Fall when the weather turns. Volunteers and assistance to provide meals, warm clothing and sleeping bags is needed.

Lending A Helping Hand:

In partnership with the South County Youth Coalition the Coalition is providing limited assistance to help individuals and families move towards self-sufficiency. Funds are awarded for a specific purpose that will move the recipient forward towards self-sufficiency.

From Homelessness to a Home:

The Coalition is providing rental deposit assistance for those where housing has been secured, but they are short of funds to pay the deposit needed to get into the unit.  Funds are awarded on a limited basis, once financial ability to maintain housing has been demonstrated and the client participates in a case management program.  These funds are used only when assistance through other housing programs is not sufficient for the deposits required.

Clothing Those In Need:

Working with St. Barnabas Episcopal Thrift Store and St. Patrick’s Shamrock Thrift Shop we are providing homeless individuals and families with clothing. Clothing is provided on a limited basis for anyone in need and especially for employment purposes.  Clothing vouchers are given by our partner agencies of the Coalition to those in need that are then redeemed at the thrift stores.  This program has been designed to supplement the efforts of other clothing programs in the area.

Dental Services for Adults:

In partnership with Community Health Centers of the Central Coast, with funding from United Way of San Luis Obispo County, and an anticipated grant from the County of San Luis Obispo Preventative Health Grant, and we will begin in late summer to offer mobile dental clinics in the South County for homeless adults.  There are currently no such services available in the South County.

Developing a Community Services Center:

Our major efforts remain focused on identifying and securing an appropriate site for the future South County Community Services Center.  Through this center we seek to offer a full range of resources to empower low income and homeless families, children and individuals to build self-esteem through acquiring the education, job training, food and medical services they need to become self-sufficient and productive community members.

Over 100 potential sites have been assessed.  Zoning, accessibility to public transportation, neighboring uses and property size are among the challenges we face in securing a site.  Efforts aggressively continue to secure an appropriate location, working with area business, government, civic and service partners.
