The Story

EVENT DATE: May 17, 2014

FUNDRAISER SET UP DEADLINE: May 17, 2014

Picture the excitement of a child on their first canoe experience. And now you can help the Bronx River Alliance provide canoe opportunities for youth to connect with nature on the Bronx River! Join the 2nd annual Starlight 5K Canoe Challenge and help us raise vital funds to make canoeing on the river available to 1,000 kids and their families, and keep the river accessible and navigable for hundreds more paddlers to enjoy. Help us reach our $45,000 goal by signing up to participate today! You’ll challenge yourself and have a ton of fun while supporting a great cause.

How does the canoe challenge work? Individuals (14+years old) will form 12 teams of up to 10 people each to compete in a canoe relay course (five legs) for a total distance of 5K. The 12 teams will commit to fundraising $3,000 (Ex. if 10 people on a team, each person will raise $300). Teams will be led by a designated Team Captain. The Alliance will support each participant in reaching their goal by providing their very own fundraising webpage to share with family, friends and social networks. Registration fee: $50 (Tax-deductible and does not apply towards fundraising goal).

When and where: Saturday, May 17th (Rain date, May 18th). Starlight Park (map)  at 11am. Click here to see a map of the relay course.

Equipment and training: We will provide a canoe, paddles and life vests for your team. Two pre-race canoe clinics will be provided to hone your paddling skills and to try out the actual race course.

Goodies & Prizes: All participants will receive a t-shirt and a goody bag. There will be fun prizes for the fastest three teams and top three fundraising individuals! The fastest canoe will get the coveted title of “2014 Bronx River Canoe Champions.”

Public Ceremony and Celebration: After the canoe race, we will celebrate the winners and kick off an afternoon of festivities as we mark the beginning of paddling season at Starlight Park, with music, food, guided interpretive canoe trips, bike loans, fishing demonstration and much more!

We can only accommodate 12 Teams, so pull together your family, friends and colleagues and register today!

Bronx River Alliance is a Non-Profit organization and all funds raised are tax-deductible.
