Recent studies (2013) indicate that almost a quarter of the children (24.4%) in Allegany County, NY, experience hunger or food insecurity. Many of their families have turned to food pantries and soup kitchens like those run by Cuba Cultural Center to find the food they desperately need. Often, funding for food purchases can be accessed through various types of grants. But emergency food providers must have a place to store, prepare, and distribute food in order to help families in need. Daily operating expenses, such as rent, utilities, staff salaries, and other expenses may not be a glamorous part of the emergency food process, but they are vital nonetheless. Whether it be the single mother trying to raise a family on a part time minimum wage job, or the senior citizen who has worked his whole life but now finds himself choosing between his medicine and food for the table, Cuba Cultural Center offers more than food: It offers hope. Hope for a better education because a child can now come to school with a full stomach. Hope that that senior will be able to have both medicine and food. And it offers dignity. Dignity by saying that it’s okay to need a helping hand. We need $20,000 to pay for those vital expenses over the coming year. Please be that helping hand by sponsoring one of the members of our 5K team.
