Supporting our Ugandan Acupuncture Trainees

THE STORY:

The Global Acupuncture Project (formerly The PanAfrican Acupuncture Project) has been conducting acupuncture trainings since 2003. During this period, GAP has developed an effective teaching protocol. GAP brings together local providers and, using didactic and clinical educational approaches, teaches them how to use the Training Manual to be able to proceed from intake through treatment planning to treatment. A large proportion of the training is close supervision of the Trainees as they treat patients. This new project will be the next step in Trainee education, strengthening and enriching their skills in their places of work.

Project Objectives
The goal of the 6-month project, through intensive interactions with the Trainees, is to solidify and build upon the acupuncture foundations previously attained during each Trainee’s initial training. With this, the Trainees will be even better able to confidently, effectively, and safely employ the appropriate acupuncture protocols to treat patients within their communities, as well as better integrate acupuncture into their health-facility practice. The site visits will also serve to sensitize and educate the local people about the effectiveness of this complementary and/or alternative health-care modality. Ultimately, those in marginalized communities will gain increased access to acupuncture and be given the opportunity to reduce their pain and suffering, improve the quality of their lives, and gain a greater sense of hope. Because those who are trained are from these same communities, their impact is long term and ongoing.

Evaluation
GAP has developed tools to measure the impact, efficacy, and effectiveness of the trainings. All Trainees have to take and pass a written and practical examination to be able to become certified. To help in evaluating the treatments themselves, at the time of each treatment, all patients complete the Measure Your Medical Outcome Profile (MYMOP). This is a simple instrument designed for patient evaluation of the treatments. By visiting the sites where the Trainees work, the Trainer will also have the opportunity to help develop better systems for gathering and collecting data.
