74th Elementary's Newsroom
Organized by: Alison Barlow
This is for the kids!
Help buy equipment for an elementary school newsroom! Give kids the tools to learn creatively and discover their hidden talents.
How did this project happen? I met the principal of 74th Elementary as she was starting her new position. She is charged with turning an F school around. I was impressed by her drive and vision. I don't have children at the school. With that said - I am a firm believer that all children deserve to have a creative and engaging classroom experience - no matter what neighborhood they are from.
Why do this project? I loved my elementary school years. Some of my fondest memories were of the art class, computers and things outside the traditional textbook learning. When I toured 74th I was sad to see the condition of the newsroom. There were boxes piled up, peeling paint and equipment held together with duct tape. I knew this was something I could do to help that directly impacted students and faculty.
This newsroom will never be done without outside help. This is up to us!
What have we done so far? In April, I purchased furniture, received donations from a local paint store, and recruited friends to clean up and paint the facility. We even painted two green screens - one for the news desk and one for the weather area. I have been able to raise some funds for the equipment but need help. I hope to buy cameras, tripods, microphones, computer, and a tricaster (this allows for use of a local TV station's donated graphics on the green screens we painted).
How will this benefit kids? The school has newsroom where students are supposed to broadcast daily announcements, produce videos for classes and hold an after school club. If students can learn how to operate cameras and equipment, write scripts, conduct interviews, and produce videos they are building communication skills, improving their writing and learning how to work as a team. These skills will be useful for their entire life.
Why this school? The school serves 620 students. 100% receive free breakfast and free/reduced lunch. Many receive free dinner. The children at this school live challenging lives. Many don't have much at home. School is a refuge where hopefully they can learn, be creative and realize their potential.
