When I lace up my sneakers on June 1 for this next challenge of running 7 marathons in 7 days in 7 states, I will be running the Heartland Series with my heart, not just my feet.
I have once again joined the “Run 4 Brad” fundraising, and I couldn’t be more excited to tell you about it, update you and invite you to support me and this initiative.
Run 4 Brad was founded by the intrepid Jessica Berman, after her husband Brad suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke on August 4, 2013, as he was lacing up for a training run for what should have been his 4th marathon. This brain injury resulted from a congenital AVM (arteriovenous malformation) which had ruptured that fateful morning but had otherwise been asymptomatic for the previous 37 years of Brad’s healthy, active, productive life. After 4 months in the hospital, Brad has since been home where he continues his courageous recovery alongside his wife and 2 young boys.
The goal of the Run4Brad team is to raise money to build a new lower limb robotics program at the prestigious Burke Medical Research Institute in Southern Westchester. Burke’s existing upper limb robotics clinic has yielded impressive results, and now it’s time to provide lower limb resources to help those, like Brad, who have suffered traumatic brain injuries to maximize their respective rehabilitation efforts. This CBS segment produced on Brad, his family, and the robotics clinic they are building impressively explains the science and why lower limb robotics have the ability to change so many people's lives! http://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-robotic-rehab-may-help-young-stroke-victim-reclaim-future/
The Run 4 Brad movement has raised over $500,000 which has immediately been put to use, including for the purchase of two robots and supporting staff.
I hope you are as inspired as I am by the Bermans and their efforts to bring lower limb robotics to patients in need.
While I may not be the fastest runner, I still can run. So I will. I will Run 4 Brad. We hope that one day, with your help to build the lower limb robotics clinic, we will run with Brad!!!
I will run with my heart, be grateful for your contributions and be fueled by the courage and determination of those rehabilitating and awaiting the use of lower limb robotics. Together we can make that dream a reality.
Thank you for all your anticipated invaluable support!
