BENEFITING: The Against Malaria Foundation
EVENT DATE: Aug 08, 2013
For my last year of my 20s, I'ma admit I'm a little too old to accept all the bday drinks and bottles of wine you may be inclined to offer because you are lovely people. You know what will still taste delicious? A little "effective altruism" instead :)
I really like this org, GiveWell*, that ranks charities based on social impact effectiveness.
The top-ranked charity right now would turn a cocktail's worth of dinero into a malaria-resistant mosquito net ("long-lasting insecticide-treated nets"). Considering how much I resent mosquitos, esp when they cause serious preventable illness/death, I think banishing them from other people's parties (eg, lives) would be a beautiful/apt summer project!
*"GiveWell is a nonprofit dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities and publishing the full details of our analysis to help donors decide where to give.
Unlike charity evaluators that focus solely on financials, assessing administrative or fundraising costs, we conduct in-depth research aiming to determine how much good a given program accomplishes (in terms of lives saved, lives improved, etc.) per dollar spent. Rather than try to rate as many charities as possible, we focus on the few charities that stand out most (by our criteria) in order to find and confidently recommend the best giving opportunities possible."
