8th Annual ALS Valentine's Plunge

I am excited and slightly terrified to announce that I will be participating in this years 8th Annual Valentine Plunge in Manasquan, NJ. Every year hundreds of sane (the verdict is still out on this...) people flock to the shorelines of the Atlantic dressed in costumes to show their courage and support for the ALS community and plunge into the icy waters!
You may be like me and are not as familiar with ALS aka Lou Gehrig's Disease. I'm mean I have heard of it. But what is it?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. ALS makes it hard to walk, speak, eat, swallow, and breathe. These problems can lead to injury, illness, and eventually death.
This cause and disease has become near to my heart over the past year. As many of you know, I have been dating an amazing guy who's father passed away from this disease 7 years ago. In response, this prompted him to create the Stay Tough Fight Strong non-profit organization who helped found this event. (Read more about that here:
I couldn't be more proud and honored to be joining him and Team Tim to raise funds and dress up as Bowlers to " Strike out ALS" !
