BENEFITING: JEWISH DISASTER RESPONSE CORPS INC
In commemoration of the 13th anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Service & Remembrance, New York Says Thank You Foundation and Jewish Disaster Response Corps have teamed up to bring over 300 volunteers from around the U.S. from September 4-7 to Oklahoma to help in the ongoing rebuilding effort from last May’s deadly tornadoes.
The main project will be a community-wide “barn-raising” to help rebuild 1 Day Ranch – an animal rescue and therapeutic horse-riding facility damaged in the violent tornado that hit Bethel Acres on May 19, 2013.
About 1 Day Ranch:
Founded in 2010 by Maeghan Hadley, 1 Day Ranch is a safe haven for horses, goats, dogs, pigs, and other animals rescued by local law enforcement from abuse and neglect situations. Beyond the rescue program, Maeghan’s true passion is sharing the amazing powers of these animals with special needs, disabled, and at-risk young people and adults. From the teenage girl battling eating disorders who finds inner strength in her interaction with a rescued horse, to the young man with Down Syndrome whose time spent with animals sparks hope – 1 Day Ranch is a sanctuary and place of healing for both animals and people.
The “barn-raising” will replace the tornado-damaged structure with a state-of-the-art pre-engineered barn from Lester Building Co. It will include 10 horse stalls, a tack and equipment room, administrative office, and a learning space where Maeghan can engage young people in animal education and service-learning projects to train community members in animal rescue & disaster response.
In order for this project to succeed, we must raise $200,000 by June 1, 2014 to allow for pre-construction and timely ordering of building materials. Donations beyond our goal will go directly to support 1 Day Ranch’s ongoing program needs. Donations of in-kind materials and services will also help to ensure the success of this inspiring community-wide volunteer effort.
