BENEFITING: SARATOGA COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL INC
Many of you know that for the past two years I have been working on this very important project for our community. Tempered By Memory is a 9/11 memorial sculpture created from World Trade Center steel by local artists John Van Alstine and Noah Savett to be donated to the City of Saratoga Springs, NY in September 2012 for our regional community to appreciate and reflect upon for generations to come.
Tuesday, July 24th marked a monumental moment for the project with Tempered By Memory's permanent installation in High Rock Park, which is the result of a community-wide effort by hundreds of individuals and businesses supporting this important project. We are truly grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from the community, especially from the contractors and individuals donating their time, talent, equipment and material to the project. Their collective effort is heart-warming and represents the true essence of the human spirit.
We have come far, yet our job is not complete. There is still much work to be done to finish the site by the dedication ceremony in September and to ensure that the 9/11 sculpture will be preserved for future generations. With a project budget of $260,000 we still need to raise $25,000 to meet our goal.
This project is important to me and our community, as a memorial to 9/11 and a work of contemporary art. I have set a personal challenge to raise at least $5,000 towards the final phase of fundraising and I would like to ask you to join me. Every gift, big or small makes a difference. Please, give what you can to Tempered By Memory.
Tempered By Memory | Project History
The idea for this unique project began in the spring of 2010 when the Saratoga Springs Naval Support Activity presented Saratoga Arts with the opportunity to acquire World Trade Center steel from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Out of initial conversations came a shared vision: to create a forward-looking, commemorative work of contemporary art for downtown Saratoga Springs that serves as a memorial to September, 11 2001.
Saratoga Arts commissioned artists John Van Alstine and Noah Savett to create Tempered By Memory, the memorial sculpture made from World Trade Center steel. Their proposal was sensitive to the material, respectful of the past and forward-thinking. The artists worked with a team of volunteer ironworkers and crane operators to create the sculpture, which was completed Summer 2011. Tempered By Memory will be donated to the City of Saratoga Springs at a dedication ceremony in September 2012.
Saratoga Arts worked closely with the City of Saratoga Springs to confirm a location that would provide the best setting for the sculpture. After much community-wide discussion about the placement of the sculpture, a Sculpture Siting Committee, chaired by Joe Dalton and comprised of a broad cross section of community leaders, was appointed by Mayor Scott Johnson to hold public forums, conduct meetings and carefully review all potential locations for Tempered By Memory. In December 2011 the Sculpture Siting Committee recommended High Rock Park as the permanent location for Tempered By Memory. Saratoga Arts, the artists and project supporters, The City of Saratoga Springs and the greater community fully embraced High Rock Park as the ideal location for Tempered By Memory.
Tom Frost, founder and principal of Frost Architecture, together with Mike Ingersoll of The LA Group worked with Saratoga Arts and the artists to design a plan for High Rock Park that integrates the naturalistic setting with the memorial sculpture and connects the piece to the natural and historical assets of the area. The rock escarpment behind Tempered By Memory is a bold and unique feature that will strongly offset the monument, and paths connecting the other historic features of the area will now encourage visitors to quietly meander, explore and reflect wile spending more time in High Rock Park.
With a community-wide embrace and the unanimous approval of both the Saratoga Springs City Council and the Design Review Commission, the integrated plan will be a positive addition and improvement to the existing area by giving more prominence to the natural and historical features of High Rock Park, making the area more inviting to visitors.
This project, administered by Saratoga Arts, has come to fruition solely on the basis of privately donated material, equipment, labor and cash. As we enter into the final phase of the project; preparing the site and permanently installing Tempered By Memory in High Rock Park, we are grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from the community, especially from the contractors donating their time, equipment and material to the project, yet our job is not done.
We still need to raise $25,000 to meet our fundraising goal and ensure the completion of the project to be enjoyed by the community for generations to come. We welcome you to join us in this community-wide effort, please consider making a gift to Tempered By Memory.
