Outhouses are not extinct! Many people living in the United States do not have Indoor Plumbing and a proper indoor toilet.

This fundraising campaign's purpose is to bring awareness to the general public of the existing issues regarding access to clean, safe drinking water and environmentally sound sanitation that residents of rural communities face everyday, while raising funds to assist in bringing potable water to these rural communities.

The Challenge

SERCAP is challenging its supporters to learn what it is like to live without indoor plumbing and have to work to find clean water sources.  For a 24 Hour period, participants will give up using the indoor plumbing in their homes and will need to get by using water from outside sources. Water is a NECESSITY! Everyone needs water, but not everyone in the United States has reliable access to clean water. We need to, as a society, come together and recognize this fact.

How it Works

  • Create your Fundraising Page and SERCAP will contact you to register and receive your 5 Gallon Bucket.
  • Share the link to your Fundraising Page with friends, family, colleagues’, etc. and collect pledges / donations.
  • Before the challenge begins at 7AM on the given day (you and your team can choose any day that is convenient for you), fill your bucket from a tap (bathtub or sink) in your house.
  • Go about your day as normal, using only water from the bucket for most tasks (e.g. bathing, washing dishes, etc.).
  • Fill bucket from an outside source as needed.
  • Complete your day without using: shower, toilet, sink, washing machine, and  dish washer inside your home.
  • Take Photos and Videos of yourself and your team participating and share them on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. and don't forget to use the hash-tag: #ADayWithoutIndoorPlumbing.
  • Track your water usage.
  • Collect remaining pledges / donations and submit to SERCAP.
  • Talk to your network about why participating in this challenge is important.

Acceptable Alternate Water Sources:

  • Ask a Neighbor for Assistance: Participants are encouraged to ask a neighbor to allow them to use their sink to refill their bucket. This will allow you to access clean water and will also give you the opportunity to talk to your neighbor about the event and to ask for a donation.
  • Purchase Clean Drinking Water
  • Refill at a public place with a public tap

How to Boil and Filter Water*

  • Fill a large soup pot with water (leave about two inches at top)
  • Place over medium-high to high heat and bring to a rolling boil
  • Boil for at least 3 minutes
  • Remove from heat and set pot aside allowing water to cool to room temperature (while water is cooling sediment will sink to the bottom)
  • Slowly pour cooled water through a cheese cloth, coffee filter, or new nylon stockings into storage container.

*Boiled and filtered water can be used for washing dishes and other household chores, but we highly recommend purchasing bottled water for cooking and drinking.

Flushing a Toilet with your Bucket

  • To flush your toilet with a bucket of water requires a gallon of water, poured directly into the toilet bowl.
  • Start slowly at first, then quickly add the rest of the water into the bowl. The shape of the toilet and the pressure from the water in the bucket pushes everything through the pipes.
  • There’s no need to use the handle or empty the toilet tank. Save the water in the tank for another day of water restrictions.

Disclaimer: All participants are participating in this event at their own risk. SERCAP is providing instructions for properly boiling and filtering water and encouraging participants to buy drinking water for the duration of the activity. (Most grocery stores sell gallon jugs of filtered drinking water for a very low cost - $0.88 - $1.00 per gallon) SERCAP cannot be held responsible for illness or injury caused by drinking or cooking with improperly filtered or unclean water.
