Happy 2014! I am crazy enough to run the 2014 Boston Marathon but wise enough to do it as a member of the ARC Team. I need all the help I can get and a combination of Dan, Nicole, Rebecca, and my personal trainer/conscience/tremendous friend Karen O. Teller - with an occasional training table meal provided by her dear better half Richard - will pull me through!
Funds raised by Team Red Cross 2014 participants will benefit American Red Cross of Massachusetts programs and services. I am particularly focused on raising funds for the ARC Food Pantry to make sure, among other things, that there is a turkey in every bag this Thanksgiving.
My motivation to run this year is also fueled by my desire to do something positive to counter the negative forces which impacted last year's marathon. I joined a number of ARC volunteers and staff - and dear friend KOT - in the stands to watch last year's ARC runners finish. We were joined by many other groups - including families from Newtown - all of us having come together to witness runners complete an amazing physical task - many of whom were also running for a cause beyond testing their physical limits. What we witnessed and learned more of in the coming days was something beyond description in terms of sheer barbarity and terror. The response of those who were and remain directly impacted is a source of daily inspiration and reflection; so too was the response of the people of the City of Boston.
Inspired, motivated and humbled by all of these factors - and with the support of Team Red Cross - I will attempt my first marathon in 19 years with tools that require significantly more WD-40 to remain operational. I would be enormously grateful for your support of my run - of any kind (positive thoughts and incantations count too!)
