Hi Family and Friends!
Thanks for taking the time to visit here and learn more about what this is all about. On November 6th I will be running the New York City Marathon as a member of Team Healthy Kids in support for the charity Action for Healthy Kids.
So why running? And why this cause in particular? Well for those who have known me for the past 2-3 years, this might appear to be another event to add to the resume. Another finisher’s medal and maybe even a PB (personal best). Or just another stepping stone towards Boston Qualifier status. Sure I have to admit, all of that sound incredibly sexy and I would be lying if they are not important. They are, but recently I had the chance to reflect on how running for me has gone from fear to casual acquaintance to hobby to routine even to borderline obsession. See the reason how this type of relationship came to be was born out of my struggle with an unhealthy lifestyle 20kg and 3 years ago. I cling to running out of fear of relapsing and it has been incredibly difficult to maintain the self-control to prevent tipping back. To those who struggle weight and those who have courageously fought this, it is an ongoing fight and one that will unfortunately continue for a while.
At the biological level when weight gain is sustained for 6-months to a year, our body recalibrates its equilibrium to the new level. Even sheer will and iron determination can sometime fall short to this biological wall. A person who has been at 70kg for most of his life compared to another 70kg person who has successfully lost weight from 90kg may look the same on the outside but be drastically different inside. Fat cells multiply during weight gain, but only reduces in size during weight loss. This puts tremendous mental and physical pressure on the person. That 70kg person for all his life may need 2500 calories, but the 70kg person who lost weight must not exceed 2000 calories to maintain his weight level. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the reality. It takes incredible discipline and a strong support group to fight this. But challenge and barriers can strengthen the resolve and that’s why I am here today running for this cause and breaking away from my own obsession.
The best chance against this issue is making first contact with kids. We need to instill a healthy lifestyle mentality and empower children with good food options and physical exercise opportunities. Action for Healthy Kids represent this cause and I am incredibly privileged and motivated to join their team on this lifelong journey. It has already started and we sure can use your help at the upcoming November 6th checkpoint.
Please consider supporting me and this mission – whether that means committing yourself to a weekly run, throwing out the sodas and minimizing the Laksa (Singapore dish that is delightful to taste buds but sinful to health) in your life, starting a running or health conscious group in the community or school, donating any amount financially, offering words of encouragement or suggestions for my marathon day playlist. In return I will share a unique message from a kid who will benefit directly from your support, join you for a run, or even help you hatch a Pokémon egg.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
