"2 Miles to Hopkinton"
April 14, 2017
Hi friends! - Guy and Carina will be running the 2017 Boston Marathon as a father-daughter team for BIDMC. Team Fish donations directly support BIDMC's Annual Fund (see below).
In 2011, Guy ran his first marathon - the Boston Marathon. He did it for BIDMC and directed the funds to its outreach affiliate, the Bowdoin Street Health Center. They do amazing work there addressing classical medical problems, but also boldly tackling the social determinants of health (housing, utility bills, food deserts, and on and on...). It was a thrilling experience, but disappointing as he got injured 3 weeks before and essentially ran on a "broken knee" (with doctor's supervision!).
He finished well off his training time, but what many didn't know was that his hero that day was Carina who met him at the tail end of HeartBreak hill, handed him vitally needed coconut water to stave off cramps, and ran the last four miles in at his side. (Little did he know that she woke up with the flu that morning!! You are NOT supposed to run with the flu!)
So, here we are, six years later, and Guy and Carina have the amazing opportunity to run the whole enchilada, 26.2 miles, together as a father-daughter team. Despite the fact that Carina now lives 3,000 miles away having started a PhD program at UC Davis, Team Fish is in this together. And if that were not enough we have the chance to give back to an amazing institution that has really saved our family countless times.
In just the past 6 years, we have had many family members who could not get the correct diagnosis at really good medical centers come to BIDMC and almost instantly get on the right path. From CSF leaks, to rare insulin tumors, from pneumonias masquerading as something worse, to difficult to treat head and neck cancer, we have time and time again been amazed at the technical excellence at BIDMC. But without exception, every family member we have sent there has spontaneously remarked about how warm and caring a place it is.
In gratitude for being a big, warm-hearted place at times when we most needed its excellence in medicine, Guy and Carina are running 53.4 miles to raise money to continue its mission of training the finest doctors, doing groundbreaking research, and delivering the most amazing care anywhere.
Thanks BIDMC. And we hope you will contribute to its amazing mission by supporting our run!
Team BIDMC is running to support a variety of programs, including Kidney Disease Research, Bowdoin Street Healthy Champions Program, The Klarman Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), The Cancer Center, and the Annual Fund. Several of our runners are also supporting our Needham, Milton, Plymouth and Cambridge Health Alliance affiliates. Thank you for your support!
Team Fish for the Annual Fund
BIDMC depends on the Annual Fund to fulfill its mission of providing compassionate patient care.
This fund raises unrestricted dollars that can be used immediately for a wide range of needs. They provide a reliable, steady source of funding for the programs that need it most:
- Promising research projects, such as cancer genetics investigations
- Annual operating costs, such as funding for social worker positions
- Career development opportunities for staff, such as continuing education scholarships for nurses
- Expansion of clinical spaces, like minimally invasive surgery suites
- Academic and teaching programs, such as fellowships for the next generation of physicians in growing service lines
