BOX GIVING SLUG FEAST
EVENT DATE: Nov 15, 2014
FUNDRAISER SET UP DEADLINE: Nov 15, 2014
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Pish posh, we're not exactly sure who 'they' are but they're certainly one pessimistic lot and we've got a whole bunch of folks out to prove them wrong.
Fighters4Life, in partnership with the venerable Gleason's Boxing Gym, put out a call for men and women aged 20 and up who wanted to learn to box. To become amateur pugilists.
Initially the only requirement was that they must have zero experience in the ring. However the response was so immediate and so breathtaking (it seemed people were keen on picking up something new!), we decided to open up the field to boxers with experience as well.
After a couple months of training from the fine folks at Gleason's these (mostly) newbies, scratch that, these boxers will climb into the ring on November 15th for their first fight in front of a packed house below Manhattan Bridge at Gleason's in Brooklyn.
Be sure to check back periodically as we'll provide time and ticketing updates as we approach fight night!
We're here to highlight, encourage, aid in the efforts and applaud these newcomers to the sport by creating an opportunity for them to learn the sweet science and eventually put their dukes up for the exceptional charities we represent.
About The Charities
Give A Kid A Dream, run by Perry D'Alessio out of Gleason's Gym Brooklyn and Jacklyn Atkins of Gleason's Gym Jersey Shore, is a group that strives to save inner city youth from the streets and provide them with the tools to overcome adversity. The organization looks to mentor and empower youth during their formative years and instill the confidence and discipline to set them on a good path in life. Our motto: "Embrace, Empower, Educate and Elevate"....
Feathers From Devon, an organization started by Angela Lam, seeks to put a smile on a sick child's face and be there for the families of those children with serious illness. Angela can surely empathize as this comes right from her heart. Devon, her daughter and the namesake of the charity, passed away from brain cancer at a young age.
Occupy Cancer, started by Jen Nash-Kasuga, is a lifeline for those living with any type of cancer to reach out to. Be it for a chat, a story, promoting a fundraiser or just general encouragement, Jen is personally there. As a decade long survivor of brain cancer herself, there's no one better to inspire those who are working towards their own cancer free future.
The Sato Project, a group dedicated to rescuing abandoned & abused dogs in Puerto Rico, was born when 'Hands for Paws' (Manos Por Patas) a rescue group who worked tirelessly for 6 years in PR for the same cause closed its doors. The Sato Project is headed by champion amateur boxer Chrissy Beckles. They fight so the dogs of Puerto Rico don't have to.
