THE STORY:

The Capital Wing has finished and proudly flown its Vultee BT-13 in the appropriate markings representing a trainer based at Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF) during WWII in honor of Squadron and Commemorative Air Force Honorary Members, General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., USAF (Ret) combat leader of the Tuskegee Airmen, and Colonel Charles E. McGee, USAF (Ret), also a leading Tuskegee Airman. The “buzz number” for the trainer, TU-70, represents a BT-13 that Colonel McGee flew the most times (20+) during training in 1943. We have been proud to fly Colonel McGee himself in the aircraft and allow him to take the controls of the trainer himself one again. Unfortunately, this BT-13 aircraft experienced a loss of power on approach to landing at our home airfield, and while the pilot was able to make a safe, but essentially power-off landing, the damage to the engine was severe. The Pratt & Whitney R-1340 “Wasp” engine was sent to the overhaul facility at Covington Aircraft Engines where their tear-down inspection resulted in the need for a complete overhaul estimated at over $60,000. At this point we have raised over $30,000 towards that contract, but there are other repairs needed. You Can Help! A key part of getting the aircraft back in the air is the overhaul of the propeller and engine accessories estimated to cost $13,000. It is this important part of the repair effort that we are asking for donations to accomplish. All funds raised for the total repairs will go strictly for contracted repair, overhaul and materials. All on-aircraft labor will be performed by volunteers, including by some of our cadets (ages 12-23). The Capital Wing is located in Culpeper, VA and serves the Nation's Capital as the unit for Virginia, Maryland, and DC. Our plan is to have this aircraft back flying in support of the Commemorative Air Force RISE ABOVE Program telling the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Having this aircraft operational again will be a key part of telling that story!
