Who BABEL is

Without institutional or foundational funding, the BABEL Working Group has, since 2004, worked very hard to develop new co-disciplinary, nomadic, and convivial confraternities between the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and the fine arts (both within and beyond the academy), to build shelters for humanist and post/humanist vagabonds, to foster a politics of friendship both within and beyond the University, and to create new spaces for para-academic alliances.

What BABEL supports

To those ends, BABEL has many projects and initiatives to which it directs its energies, including:

In addition, BABEL has a special focus on helping to foster the work of graduate students and early career researchers, through

  • sponsoring presentation of their work at symposia and conferences
  • writing awards
  • publication
  • grants for travel to professional conferences
  • subsidized housing for its biennial conference
  • helping to curate and support new publishing and other scholarly initiatives envisioned and managed by graduate students and early career researchers (such as eth press, Speculations journal, Badiou Studies journal, Networks and Neighbours journal, and the like).

And with regard to those more established in their respective fields, BABEL offers important venues for the development of radically creative and genre-busting modes of scholarly and para-scholarly thinking and composing (print-based, digital, open-access, and beyond).

Equally important to BABEL's mission are the social events it throws throughout the year at scholarly gathering sites, designed to engineer new relationships among potential collaborative partners.

The Ask

For ten years, the BABEL Working Group has done all of this through the dedicated energies and volunteer labors of its members, as well as through various, random acts of spontaneous financial donations, but there is no way for BABEL to continue growing its projects without some sort of concerted fundraising effort on an annual, or biannual, basis. We therefore ask that everyone with a vested interest in BABEL's mission, projects, and future please consider donating something (and no amount is too small) to this Crowdrise campaign, in order to help BABEL thrive.

To participate in the promotion

In order to spread the joy of giving, BABEL is hosting its first fundraising event, running now through Tuesday, May 6. Here's how it works:

  • On Tuesdays and Fridays a prize will be given back to one randomly-selected participant contributor.
  • Contribute at least $15 during that period (before 11:59pm PST) to have a chance at winning the gift.
  • Contribute $100 or more at any point in the fundraising event to have a chance at winning every remaining gift in the event.
