As the Program Director for Back on My Feet Boston I am honored to be running the 2015 Boston Marathon as part of Team Running Home. Every day I get the opportunity to work with individuals who have goals: to run a mile, stay sober, gain custody of their children, feel confident speaking in a group, lower their blood pressure, get their GED, quit smoking, find employment, run a 5K, move into their own apartment. By joining Back on My Feet they are able to work towards these goals with the unconditional support of a team. I have chosen to dedicate each of my 26 miles to a particular individual who has inspired me, who has pushed through their own challenges, or simply is the reason this program exists. On April 20th I will carry each of their names with me as I make my way from Hopkinton to Boylston Street.
Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering stability, self-sufficiency and independence in the homeless and at-risk population by utilizing a proven, disruptive technology: a carefully designed and closely monitored team wellness program. Back on My Feet strikes many as a unique solution to a pervasive social issue. We foster stability within the homeless and at-risk populations by first engaging our Members in running & walking as a means to improve health, build confidence, strength and self-esteem. We do provide a community that embraces respect, discipline and teamwork and create a common link between our Members, our volunteers and the communities that we serve. For Back on My Feet, running/walking/wellness is the means by which our Members discover that they are capable of accomplishing anything with hard work and dedication. Through our programs, our Members are smoking less, making better nutrition choices, getting regular exercise, enrolling in school and job training courses at greater rates and moving from emergency housing to independent living. They credit Back on My Feet with giving them a renewed sense of belief in themselves and the courage to take the steps to move their lives forward. Using the power of community and shared commitment, Back on My Feet measures success not by miles logged, but by the achievements of our Members on their road home.
