BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
ORGANIZER: Every Mother Counts
EVENT DATE: Sep 24, 2017
I am excited to be training for my 7th marathon on behalf of Every Mother Counts. I will be participating in the Berlin Marathon this September 24th, along with 25 other runners. We are running as a team to raise funds to improve access to essential maternity care and raise awareness about one of the biggest barriers mothers face trying to access this critical care around the world, distance.
Why I Run:
One woman dies every two minutes bringing life into the world. That’s more than 300,000 mothers dying each year. The good news is, up to 98% of global maternal deaths are preventable! With access to education and training, transportation, and supplies, we can greatly reduce the number of preventable deaths that occur during pregnancy, delivery and post-partum.
Had I not had access to the care I received the day I became a mom, I would not have the opportunity to experience the wonder and joy of raising my own two healthy children today. Since I founded Every Mother Counts in 2010, I have put in thousands of miles to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. Since 2011, I have completed six full marathons, 10 half marathons and one 24hour relay race. And almost 80,000 people have run on behalf of Team EMC!
Berlin is one of the six World Marathons (link to world marathons) and is arguably the fastest marathon course in the world. Germany is also a leader in healthcare with a adopted preventive health care programme for pregnant women with medical check-ups and medical care before, during and after delivery. In fact, its low maternal mortality ratio (there are only 6 deaths for every 100,000 births in the country) illustrates the benefits of a comprehensive system of healthcare on its mothers.
With your support, Every Mother Counts can continue to support the training and continued education of midwives and birth attendants, provide rides for thousands of mothers, equip healthcare providers with supplies in eight countries that will help to ensure safer birth outcomes around the world.
Thank you so much for your support!
