THE STORY:

HOPE, a four letter word that could be the difference between life and death. So many of our young people are ending their lives because they feel they live in hopeless situations. There are so many negative voices in this world speaking to our young, saying they aren’t pretty enough, smart enough, or rich enough. We aspire to change this and bring alight the truth with Bessie Coleman’s famous words, “If I can do it, you can do it!”

Bessie Coleman was born into a time of racial oppression. The 1920’s wasn’t slavery, but it wasn’t liberation either. Bessie grew up in deep poverty, but with her faith and her hunger to learn, she was determined to make something of herself. Bessie defied what culture told her she couldn’t do or couldn’t be. The poor, Black girl from Atlanta, Texas, became the first, Black female to get an International Pilot’s License in the world! That’s right, the world! Not only was she known as being one of the best pilots in the world, but as an amazing motivational speaker and civil rights activist. Bessie had a true vision of freedom that went beyond being under the label “slave,” it was equality that surpassed the Jim Crow laws of segregation. She wanted America to see that skin color didn’t matter and she proved just that. With great courage, Bessie arose without the guidance of Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks who had yet to be born. In spite of the struggles, resistance and adversity Bessie faced daily; she never let it deter her from achieving her dreams.

With this film of Bessie Coleman’s life, we desire to bring hope back to the schools and to the public. But making a film is costly and raising the funds can often be very difficult. Join the cause! Let’s bring the voice of hope, courage and triumph back to our children, our schools and our oppressed!
