THE STORY:

In 2003, Cheryl Perkins’s infant daughter saved her life. While nursing her fourth child, Cheryl felt a lump in her breast. Although her doctor thought it most likely was a clogged milk duct, Cheryl opted for further testing and was diagnosed with Stage IIB triple negative breast cancer. She says of her treatment, “My kids kept me going. The chemo would knock me down for about a week, but when I felt better, we did our regular stuff, like taking them to swim practice.”

Cheryl finished her treatment in 2004. Eight years later, Cheryl was selected as one of Ford’s Models of Courage for 2012-2013. That year, on a flight to Los Angeles for the Models of Courage photo shoot, she would meet The Pink Fund’s founder, Molly MacDonald, and share her interest in starting her own foundation. Cancer-free for almost 10 years, Cheryl is now volunteering for The Pink Fund. She received a newsletter from The Pink Fund asking for volunteers and decided to get involved. Cheryl says, “I am reminded of where I was at the stage of some of the applicants and volunteering puts it all in perspective: Living was my first priority. Fortunately, I didn't have to stress over finances. Stressing over bills takes away from the ultimate goal of surviving. I am just fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful organization which attempts to take away some of that stress.”

On dancing, Cheryl says learning a new dance has become another great challenge in her life. “It has been fun and as I've heard many dancers say... ‘I feel alive.’ I now know what they mean. Dancing gives you a few moments to escape the stressors of life and to feel free to allow your body to feel the rhythm. Dancing With The Survivors has given me an opportunity to learn a new dance and make some new friends. I am also thankful that this has given me another platform to raise awareness and support for breast cancer survivors. This breast cancer journey has had many twists and turns. I am thankful that my journey continues.”

On October 2, Cheryl and her Fred Astaire dance partner, Jordan Cowan, will Swing to Pharrell Williams’s very happy song, “Happy.”
