Last year I ran Boston for the second time and had a great time running with friends and family. At the expo I picked up a copy of Ryan Hall's book Running with Joy. I read it cover to cover and then shared it with my teenage girls who are just learning about the joy of running. Ryan and Sara Hall have started the Hall Steps Foundation which encourages us all to help improve the health and wellness of those in our communities and around the world. I am excited to run Boston again this year, but this time with more Joy knowing that I am also helping to support a great cause.
About the Hall Steps Foundation:
The Hall STEPS Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by professional runners Ryan and Sara Hall to engage the running community with social justice efforts. Towards this end, STEPS has two grant portfolios, one domestic and one international. Domestically, STEPS funds mentor and running programs for at risk populations across the country that aim to position athletic activity, goal-setting, training and camaraderie at the center of the national movement to improve U.S. health, wellness and economic recovery. Internationally, STEPS funds initiatives that tackle structural causes of poverty such as chronic lack of access to clean water, shelter, physical security and opportunity. To-date, this has included (1) constructing community wells in East Africa to secure water access; (2) funding an orphanage in Kenya to ensure access to shelter and basic education; and (3) sponsoring legal counsel for victims of human trafficking in Southeast Asia to enhance victims’ physical autonomy.
