EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Hello friends and family -
Once again, I am going to try and defy age, injuries, and a lifetime of being a non-athlete, by running the Boston Marathon to raise money for Bottom Line (information later in this letter.) I do this because the cause and the lives of the students helped are so much more important than any of my small complaints.
Some of you had the opportunity to hear from two of the students this organization is helping at my house in December. To remind you of their stories:
Jonathan is a junior who currently attends Wentworth Institute of Technology and was the victim of domestic violence. His Bottom Line counselor helped him become an Resident Assistant so he could move out of his house. He is now majoring in computer networking and is currently doing a co-op internship at Harvard’s IT department. He hopes to work at Google someday.
Mena is a high school senior who emigrated from Iraq and whose family faced homelessness and have moved from shelter to shelter ever since arriving here. Bottom Line helped her make her dream of a college education a reality by helping her submit applications to 9 colleges, including Harvard and Northeastern, her dream schools. Her parents are disabled and she hopes to go into healthcare and support people like them in the future.
Their incredible bravery and resillience in the face of such adversity makes my running aches and pains, and actually any problem I face, pale in comparison. And they are just two of the thousands of students that Bottom Line helps - all with equally daunting histories as they try to obtain the dream of a college education.
Bottom Line was founded in 1997 to help low-income and first-generation students get in to college, graduate from college, and go far in life. Since then, we have provided one-on-one guidance and mentoring to thousands of high school and college students. This year, we will be providing personalized support to over 3,000 students across Massachusetts and New York.
I hope to run 26.2 miles on April 21st as part of Bottom Line's 2014 Boston Marathon Team (Team Go Far). The Team is hoping to raise more than $120,000 this year which will provide support for 30 students like Jonathan and Mena for four years of college.
Thank you. Whatever you can contribute will help our students get in, graduate, and go far!
