The Story

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been selected by the Kansas City Chiefs as the Chiefs Charity Game beneficiary through 2014.

The Chiefs Charity Game is the largest one-day fundraising event in the NFL, helping children's charities in Jackson County raise more than $3.5 million in the last seven years alone. Established by Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt in 1984, the Chiefs Charity Game is Kansas City's most prestigious and unique charitable event.

This one-day event raised over 1,000,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City in 2012-2013. The Chiefs turn over Arrowhead and the game to Big Brothers Big Sisters and allow them to create unique opportunities for Matches, donors and sponsors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City (BBBSKC) has served more than 20,000 at-risk youth in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Serving over 1,700 youth in Kansas City in 2012, BBBSKC provides children facing adversity with strong, enduring and professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. BBBSKC matches school-aged youth (Littles) from one-parent or other non-traditional homes, with caring, adult volunteers (Bigs).

Statistically, children growing up in one-parent homes experience significant increased risk, particularly in the areas of education, illegal activity, and suicide. While these youth make up about 25% of the total number of school-aged youth (approximately 80,000) in the Kansas City metropolitan area, they account for 90% of juvenile court cases, 90% of high school dropouts, and 60% of teen suicides.

BBBSKC believes that youth who have a positive adult influence in his or her life are better able to reach their full potential. These one-to-one friendships, or “matches”, last a minimum of one year, however the effects last a lifetime.
