Childrens Law Center Of Central North Carolina

We provide children with quality legal advocacy focusing on domestic violence issues, high-conflict custody cases, and the rights of children in public education. Our vision is to increase children’s potential to become emotionally healthy adults through fostering their sense of hope and empowerment. Tax ID 54-2185218

The Children's Law Center advocates for children in Forsyth and Guilford Counties who experience domestic violence between the adults in their home. Children experience real trauma when they are exposed to adult violence, which is 70% likely to lead to them into abusive patterns in their own adult lives.

CLC’s skilled attorneys manage a case load of over 300 children each year. Our attorneys advocate for children based upon interviews with the children, each of the parents, their teachers, their pediatricians, and many others. They make scheduled and unscheduled visits to the homes to get a better picture of what life is really like for the children. We are helped by pro bono attorneys from firms and companies around the region.

Substance abuse and mental health issues play a role in at least 60% of our cases. Over half of the children we serve in any given year are in elementary or middle school. More than one-third of the children are age 4 and under; a heartbreaking 13% are infants.

Staff and volunteer attorneys at the Children’s Law Center give children a chance to build healthy, peaceful relationships with their parents.

Even though the courts regularly appoint CLC to cases, they do not compensate CLC for our work. The Children’s Law Center runs on a lean budget, and seeks funding from a wide range of organizations and businesses.
