This is my second year running the Boston Marathon for The Children's Room. I had an amazing experience with the TCR Staff and 2016 Miles & Memories Team/Coaches last year. Everyone was incredibly supportive throughout the training and fundraising process. I am proud to run again for such a terrific organization. I have seen the tremendous supports that TCR offers grieving families. Our WHS community has had a lot of loss over the past few years and I know many of the families that go to TCR. They all talk about how beneficial the programming and staff supports are for their families.
After the marathon last year, a number students and I decided to start a TCR program at WHS. We are hoping to have monthly events and eventually might have lunches as well. We recently walked as a group in the Annual Memories Walk. I am looking forward to help raise money for the program that helps so many of our students, staff, and families in Winchester.
This is my first time running the Boston Marathon (or any marathon for that matter) and I am equal parts excited and scared out of my mind. I am honored, however, to be running for an organization that has made such a difference for the families of students and staff of Winchester High School as The Children's Room has. TCR has been a tremendous help to many people I know at the high school, and I am continuously amazed by the support they have offered in trying times. This seems like a small way that I can help support them in the important and meaningful work they do for the surrounding communities.
Info on The Children's Room:
The Children’s Room creates safe, supportive communities so that no child, teen, or family has to grieve alone. We believe that grief is a natural and healthy response to death, everyone experiences grief in a unique way, and being with others who have experienced a death reduces isolation and can provide hope.
We rely on generous donations to keep our programs free of charge for grieving families. By helping our runners reach their fundraising goals, you’re providing support to families facing the devastating loss of a parent or child.
Our direct services for families and individuals include peer support groups (at our Arlington center and in locations throughout Greater Boston), Parenting While Grieving education series, Monthly Family Night arts-based program, teen programming, adult consultations, and information and referrals.
By participating in groups with others who know the sadness of losing a parent or sibling, children have the opportunity to express their feelings in a safe space and learn that they are not alone in their grief.
Families are able to attend our programs free of charge. All of these services for grieving families wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of donors and volunteers and the efforts of our inspiring Marathon runners.
Thank you for supporting our 2017 Miles & Memories Marathon Team as they prepare to run 26.2 miles for grieving children, teens, and families!
