WHAT IS DEAR DIARY LOL??????
Dear Diary LOL is a new devised play led by , with the . Originally conceived at the Pig Iron School with a first draft performed by Alicia Crosby, Megan Thibodeaux, Andalyn Young, Michael T. Williams, Riva Rubenoff, & Francesca Montanile- the piece is being developed for a premiere in the 2017 Philadelphia Fringe Festival.
Dear Diary LOL is built with the unaltered words found in the diaries of three 12-15 year old girls from the early 2000s, all of whom are also members of the devising ensemble (Francesca Montanile, Megan Thibodeaux, & Alicia Crosby.) The piece explores these tumultuous coming-of-age years from a female perspective, providing an intimate portrait of the ways these young girls come to understand the world around them, the way they form a self and a voice as they experiment with their malleable identities and budding adulthood. The audience takes the role of the confidant, of the diary itself, and witnesses first hand the way these young girls are learning and internalizing the rules that govern the modes of behavior around them, especially surrounding gender, status, love, and sex.
The words of the diaries are interwoven and composed to create a single narrative. It is a world where boys and adults are only heard through the filter of the pre-teen/teen girl narrator. Dear Diary LOL explodes these diaries with moments of direct address, music, and physical comedy. It draws on the style of melodrama, balanced with the humor inherent in hearing the earnest words of young girls as an adult audience- with all the benefit of hindsight.
