BENEFITING: GLOBAL PEACE FILM FESTIVAL INC
The story of DUKALE'S DREAM shares the journey that Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-lee Furness took to better understand how to make an impact on extreme poverty. As ambassadors for World Vision Australia they travelled to Ethiopia --the birthplace of coffee--, where they learned about the effectiveness of community development, fair trade, and education in reducing global poverty.
While visiting the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia, Hugh and Deborra-Lee met a 27 year-old coffee farmer named Dukale and his wife Adanesh, who were working with World Vision to lift their family out of poverty. Spending time on Dukale's farm and in Adanesh’s coffee shop, Hugh and Deborra-Lee learned first-hand about the value of fair trade coffee, clean cookstove technology, and empowering women.
Hugh was so inspired by his experience with Dukale, that he started his own fair trade coffee company in New York called Laughing Man Coffee. Laughing Man Coffee in turn buys coffee from Dukale's co-op and Hugh personally reinvests 100% of his profits to support educational programs, community development and social entrepreneurs around the world, through his non-profit foundation.
The Dream with Dukale impact campaign uses the film as a tool to spark a conversation about how each of us can address global poverty in our everyday lives with something as simple as a cup of coffee and reinforces empowerment principles that support dignified and sustainable opportunities for helping those in greatest need.
