THE STORY:

Power the movement to launch the Eddie Ellis Academy for Human Justice!

Kindly help us raise a development fund of $150,000 to convene a leadership team, implement a fund development plan and secure a space for a 2016 launch of the Eddie Ellis Academy for Human Justice!

Our work at the Center for Nuleadership on Urban Solutions is driven by an engine composed of education for critical consciousness-raising, justice advocacy and leadership development. Our founder, Eddie Ellis, created the Center to develop the next generation of activist scholars for achieving Human Justice - especially among the formerly incarcerated and those most impacted by mass incarceration.

And we are forever grateful for our founder, Eddie Ellis, who never tires of journeying right alongside us to teach us the importance of building a future beyond us, a future founded on principles of Human Rights and Human Development, towards achieving Human Justice.

The Academy is the vehicle with which to expand and embed this commitment inter-generationally.

Our blueprint for the Eddie Ellis Academy for Human Justice is drawn from our work and findings over many years.   It includes the following components:

  1. An academy for children under thirteen with incarcerated parents, comprising after-school and summer camp programs.
  2. An academy for the Human Development of thirteen to twenty-four year olds whose lives have been hardest hit by mass incarceration, comprising alternative schools and summer camp programs.
  3. An institute for Human Justice Leadership & Fellowship for formerly incarcerated men and women looking to become public policy professionals and experts, leading to a year-long paid fellowship with various public policy organizations.

The development fund will help us assemble a stellar team of educators, administrators, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, along with the Center's alumni, to develop a strategic plan and finance for making our dream of building a "Communiversity" come true:  a university without walls founded on principles of Human Rights and Human Development, towards achieving Human Justice.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Launched the Language Letter Campaign to change public perception, opinion and policy on the use of negative and inhumane language used to describe formerly incarcerated people by issuing our nationally distributed Language Letter. A few years later, the NY Public Library's Connection Guide changed terminology based on our meetings and the Language Letter Campaign.
  2. Stopped New York State from a $73 million contruction plan for maximum juvenile facility and New York City from a $64 million expansion plan to build 200 new jail cells at Horizons and Crossroads) by 100 jail cells each.  The upstate youth prison plan was replaced with a community recreational center.
  3. Trained over 650 youth, 75 parents and 45 service providers on Know Your Rights related to police encounters, human rights related to employment discrimination, and public health approach to gang intervention.
  4. Launched Project ReNu and serviced over 75 people to restore access to employment, housing and voting rights for people with criminal conviction history.
  5. Successfully trained and coached over 25 senior level probation officials of NYC Department of Probation's Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) on a new approach to community-engaged probation whereby probation is invested in the success of the clients.  This work is ongoing by popular demand from the community and the agency!
