Room to Read
773.5 million people across the globe lack the ability to read and write, and, two-thirds of the illiterate are female. Room to Read combats this startling reality by partnering with communities in Asia and Africa to fight gender inequality in education by providing girls with mentorship, life skills training, tutoring and financial support. To combat global illiteracy, Room to Read trains educators, establish libraries, construct classrooms, and publish children’s books in local languages.
Room to Read is changing children’s lives in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia.
No gift is too big or too small – for example, $20 provides a year of weekly life skills training for one girl, $250 supports a girl in secondary school for one year, and $5,000 establishes a school library in Asia.

Women for Women International
Since 1993, Women for Women International has supported more than 420,000 marginalized women survivors of conflict in war-torn countries as they move from crisis to self-sufficiency. The heart of our work is a twelve month program. At enrollment, each woman receives a monthly stipend that enables her to join 25 women to create a class. Together they learn business and life skills, access job training and join cooperatives that increase their abilities to earn incomes and support their families. Each woman develops financial literacy to improve her ability to earn and save and then applies marketable skills to find the best places to sell goods and increase her income.
Drawing strength and confidence from the support of her classmates, she transforms. Her graduation marks the beginning of a new journey. After two years, our graduates report a five-fold increase in daily income. The results are a powerful reminder that together, we can create a change.
