BENEFITING: Research Down Syndrome
EVENT DATE: Jan 18, 2014
I will be running the Charleston Half Marathon, and recruiting for a team, to benefit Research Down Syndrome, an organization interested in cognitive research to insure a better quality of life for people with DS- people like my little girl, Julia, or Jules. Even now, I am so grateful that Jules was born in 2011, when she has the option of receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. She has also had tubes in her ears; in the past, many kids with DS just went deaf and then were presumed "mute" because they couldn't speak. Less than 10 years ago, people were told that their kids with DS would probably never talk. At 2 1/2, Julia has not only started talking but has also started reading! The sky is the limit for this little girl, and I for one can't wait for that sky to be raised even higher. I am confident that Julia will go to college, will be independent, and will have a job, and I can't wait to see what findings future research brings! This is only my first step, and I hope to complete a FULL marathon for RDS in the very near future.
