I've been selected as a Journalism and Women Symposium 2015 Emerging Journalist Fellow! What does that mean?
Well, basically it means that I get to be a part of this great organization that supports young women in journalism. And part of my fellowship means getting to attend the Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) in Montana for free... well, maybe. That's where I need your help! If you have a spare $10 or $20, please consider donating.
You see, journalism isn't quite one of those fields where I get to go home and roll in my bathtub of cash each night. Heck, I don't even have a bathtub because right now I'm living in a dorm in NYC while I intern for The New York Times this summer.
A little about me: Right now I am a digital intern on the business desk at The New York Times. Pretty sweet, right? I'll be there for the summer and then I'll head back to Missouri, where I'm working on my master's degree from the University of Missouri. I work for the National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting and am also a teaching assistant for an undergraduate multimedia reporting class. In my spare time, I like to cook and hang out with my foster dogs.
I promise that I will be a good use of that extra $10 you have burning a hole in your pocket. Really. You don't need to order another handmade soy cucumber melon jar candle on Amazon. You already have three. Instead you should help out a smart and ambitious graduate student because she would really, really appreciate it. So head on over to that big "DONATE" button at the top and help out an emerging journalist.
Thank you for your help. Also, follow me on Twitter if you want to hear more about my life and my career (or if you just want to see pictures of my cute dogs).
Here's what JAWS wrote about what your money will do for me:
Help us train a new generation of journalists committed to working towards our mission of a more accurate portrayal of the whole society. Our goal is to raise $15,000 by June 30, and we know that's possible with your support.
Here's how donations of all sizes can impact the life and career of a rising female journalist:
$25: Your donation of $25 will allow one fellow to attend a digital media training session at the conference.
$50: Your donation of $50 will underwrite 1:1 mentor training sessions for one fellow.
$100: Your donation of $100 will underwrite four speaker panels for a fellow.
$250: Your donation of $250 will cover three nights of lodging for one fellow.
$500: Your donation of $500 will underwrite registration for one fellow.
$1,000: Your donation of $1,000 covers most of the registration, travel and lodging expenses for one fellow to attend the Journalism and Women Symposium conference, a one-of-a-kind career building event.
$5,000: Your $5,000 donation ensures five fellows will be able to attend CAMP, where they will gain the necessary experience, tools, and networks to expand their journalism careers.
