BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: GOTR CHICAGO MARATHON 2015
EVENT DATE: Oct 11, 2015
I grew up in the Boston area riveted by the Marathon, but always thought that running in general, and marathons in particular, was something other people could do. It wasn't until a year and a half ago that I became determined to challenge that "not for me" mentality, and learned that I could be a runner too.
As my friends at Chicago Endurance Sports and at the No Boundaries training program love to say, "running changes everything". Through running, I have felt healthy, strong and capable in ways I had never imagined possible for me.
I've volunteered for Girls on the Run twice before, once working the packet pick up booth at the celebration 5K to end their spring program, and once as a running buddy for my cousin Claudia at her celebration 5K, and the excitement at these events is so infectious. By running the Chicago Marathon as a Girls on the Run Solemate, I hope to give other girls, especially those who would otherwise be unable to afford the program, the chance to realize that they are strong and capable beyond their wildest imaginations.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any donation you can make to support the work of this fantastic organization. It's on an honor to run on their behalf, and I'm excited to share this journey with you!
For more about Girls on the Run:
Girls on the Run, it is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) life-changing, after-school program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. Simply put, Girls on the Run transforms the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The mission is achieved by volunteer coaches who meet with the girls as a team twice per week for 12 weeks as they complete the curriculum which creatively integrates running, goal-setting and training for a non-competitive 5k running event with interactive lessons that encourage positive social-emotional and physical development among participants.
Approximately 85% of girls request and receive financial assistance to participate.
