Donations made here will directly go to American Red Cross. From there, they will distribute the funds to the city of Galena, Alaska.
The community of Galena, Alaska is experiencing a severe flood. Many homes, schools, and buildings are partially or completely under water. As of now, roads that connect the town to the airport, gas stations, stores, schools are unusable and will need major repairs. The probability that smaller access roads will need as many repairs after the water goes down. We are asking for donations of any amount that will support the rebuilding that the community of Galena faces. Many of our friends and family of Galena have lost most of their belongings in the flood. If you cannot donate anything, please just say a prayer for all the people who have lost most of everything they own.
As of now, a handful of men and women have stayed in Galena to help protect what is left. Thankfully the majority of Galena residents have been evacuated to Fairbanks, Ruby, and Anchorage. The power is out in Galena so there is no way to contact a lot of families there. Many of the residents are staying in a makeshift shelter down at the airforce base. They have a few generators and satillite phones, so a few men call to update family members. Then those family members try to update as many people on facebook. Last I heard the water is slowly going over the dike that is built up around the Airports landing strip. One of the last things in Galena that is not under water. The individuals who have stayed are trying to reinforce the dike with heavy equipment. A few men have used fortlifts to move vechiles to higher ground. Lets hope that ice jam breaks soon, and safely. After the ice breaks up, many ice chunks will cause more damages, especially to those whose homes are right on the rivers edge.
