Georgia Aquarium is a leading 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is Humane Certified by the American Humane and accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Georgia Aquarium is committed to working on behalf of all marine life through education, preservation, exceptional animal care, and research and conservation initiatives across the globe. Our work alongside partner organizations directly affects the well-being of animals like African penguins!
Since 2009, penguin care experts from Georgia Aquarium have collaborated with the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB)—an internationally recognized leader in treating threatened and endangered seabirds. Together, Georgia Aquarium and SANCCOB have released over 50 rehabilitated African penguin chicks that were rescued along the South African coast. These strandings have increased in recent years, averaging between 600 and 900 penguin chicks needing rescue and rehabilitation per year due to environmental factors such as oil spills, predation, food shortages and habitat degradation. In fact, African penguin populations have dropped 60 percent in the last 30 years and the species is listed as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Additionally, Georgia Aquarium participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which aims to ensure a healthy and sustainable population of African penguins in accredited zoos and aquariums throughout North America. So far, Georgia Aquarium has hatched 26 African penguin chicks. This important work at Georgia Aquarium and in South Africa must continue for African penguin populations to recover, but funds are reliant on the generous donations of the community. Help us continue our mission to make a difference today, and please consider donating to Georgia Aquarium as we continue to care for African penguins, penguin chicks and many other aquatic species for years to come.
