Not Too Far To Go...
September 27, 2016
BENEFITING: Huntington's Disease Society of America, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
My name is Brendan McCann and I am so thrilled to be joining Team HDSA for the 2016 New York City Marathon.
Last fall, with no prior experience, I decided to challenge myself and sign up for the NYC Half, which I completed this past March. I didn't want 2016 to just be about the half, so when my friend Emily reached out to me about running the full marathon in November for HDSA, I was all in.
My friend Emily’s family is one of many affected by Huntington’s Disease. Huntington’s Disease is a neurodegenerative genetic disease in which affects a person's ability to function like the average person. It results in movement, thinking, and psychiatric complications that can lead to death. A child of someone with Huntington’s has a fifty percent chance of inheriting the gene. At age 16, my friend Emily found out about her father, Fred’s, diagnosis and her and her two sisters’, Lindsay and Charley, each three had a 50/50 chance of having the HD gene.
Emily is the type of loving friend that has always been there for me, and I am so happy that I am able to help her in the fight to raise awareness and money for HDSA, a cause that is so close to her and her family. After finishing the half marathon in March, I had my head set on one day completing the full; and now my whole heart is set on it for such a great cause and a great friend.
As I train for November, I ask that you donate. Not just for me, or my friend Emily, but for the tens of thousands of families that are at risk for inheriting Huntington’s Disease, and to finding a cure for such a horrible disease. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to running for you in the NYC Marathon on November 6th!
