THE STORY:

Thank you so much for visiting my fundraising page. In November, I will be running the NYC Marathon for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) team. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to run and represent such a strong, brave and inspiring group of people across the nation who are affected by Huntington’s Disease (HD)—those who are living with the disease and continue to be heroes to those around them; those who are at-risk and continue to lead beautiful lives without missing a beat; those who never leave the side of the loved one who is suffering with HD, providing more support and comfort than one can ever imagine. I am excited to be fundraising for each and every one of these people as part of the HD community.

Huntington’s Disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure. HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene. Today, there are approximately 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease.

Huntington’s Disease has played a major role in my life since I was very young. I was first introduced to the effects of HD as I watched my great grandma fight through end stage symptoms of her illness when I was much too young to understand what was going on. Our family’s fight continued when my grandfather was diagnosed in my teenage years and we watched his mental and physical capabilities deteriorate just as his mother’s had. He lost his battle with HD a few years ago, but in our eyes, he was victorious. He lived everyday sharing more smiles and hugs than any of us could count. And more recently, my Uncle Jerry and my mom have been diagnosed with HD. They are fighting this battle with unwavering optimism. My mom has been a pristine example of how to take a terrible situation and turn it into one full of energy, hope and inspiration. The day she was diagnosed was the day she started living for a cure—taking part in clinical trials and data collection studies, having the patience to teach her doctors what HD is all about and maintaining her role as my guide through this life. Her heart of gold shows through even in the toughest of times. She is my everything. She is my hero. And we will continue to fight for a cure.

I run for my mom.

I run for my Uncle Jerry.

I run for my grandpa.

I run for everyone impacted by HD.

And I run for all of you. Because without the love, support and donations from those around us, the hope for a cure would be minimal.

Any donation is appreciated. No donation is too small to help find a cure. And if you can’t donate, please help in sharing my page. Because HD awareness is one of the biggest hurdles we can jump over. Thank you!! From the bottom of my heart.

Kristen
