Half the Sky
AT NO POINT IN HISTORY HAVE MORE PEOPLE BEEN ENSLAVED THAN WOMEN NOW ARE IN THE SEX TRADE.
Nearly three million women and girls worldwide are currently trapped in the sex trade, and tens of thousands more are trafficked or forced into prostitution each year. From Cambodia to Chicago, human trafficking for sexual exploitation is one of the world's most profitable and unregulated black markets.
As women are stripped of their basic human rights and sold as commodities, local authorities often turn a blind eye to trafficking and forced prostitution, either because they are paid off to ignore what's happening or accept it as an inevitable result of poverty. Take action to stop the trafficking of women and girls. Help rescue a victim, restore a survivor's life, and protect millions of girls from losing their childhood to sexual exploitation.

The consequences of trafficking are devastating. Young girls, who are kidnapped or lured by the promise of a good job and then sold to a brothel, are beat repeatedly until they submit to sex. Few women forced into prostitution survive beyond their late twenties, dying of AIDS, abuse or other diseases. Children born to women enslaved in the sex trade are all but destined to follow the same path.
Though poverty and gender inequality are root causes of trafficking, they are absolutely no excuse for it. Governments and citizen organizations have made incredible headway, but more must be done.
These simple actions have the potential to reach thousands, even millions of people around the world. And that's the kind of momentum we need to hold up Half the Sky.
