BENEFITING: Heather Abbott Foundation
ORGANIZER: Heather Abbott Foundation
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I am proud to be selected once again to support the Heather Abbott Foundation by running the Boston Marathon for the second time. The Heather Abbott Foundation was formed as a result of Heather’s amputation following the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. As a new leg amputee, Heather got a fast lesson in the tremendous cost of prosthetic devices, which are often times not covered by health insurance. In order to live her life as close to the way she had prior to the bombing, she needed four different prosthetic devices which range in cost between $20,000 and $70,000. Aside from the walking leg that health insurance typically covers, Heather wanted legs for running, wearing high heels and swimming and taking a shower. Thanks to donations from individuals all over the world, the help of charitable organizations and good health insurance coverage, Heather obtain all four legs and credits them to her quick recovery and ability to return to her independent lifestyle. Daily activities that we all take for granted are not so easy for amputees. My niece Kori was the second recipient of a prosthetic from Heather’s foundation. Now almost 10, Kori lost a leg in a lawn mower accident when she was just 2. As she’s getting older, she quickly outgrows her prosthetics. The running leg from HAF enabled her to continue to be active. When she met Heather, it was the first girl she met with a prosthetic. It was life changing and they are life long friends. Help us support Heather in her endeavor to continue to help others.
