DAY TO GO
I'd like to announce that I will be running in the 2017 Boston Marathon as part of a tremendous team supporting an amazing cause! The Heather Abbott Foundation was founded by Heather Abbott in 2014 and has been doing inspiring work ever since. Without further ado I'll let Heather describe the mission of her charity in her own words...
"The Heather Abbott Foundation was formed as a result of Heather's amputation following the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013. As a new leg amputee, Heather got a fast lesson in the tremendous cost of prosthetic devices, which are often times not covered by health insurance. In order to live her life as close to the way she had prior to the bombing, she needed four different prosthetic devices which range in cost between $20,000 and $70,000. Aside from the walking leg that health insurance typically covers, Heather wanted legs for running, wearing high heels and swimming and taking a shower. Thanks to donations from individuals all over the world, the help of charitable organizations and good health insurance coverage, Heather obtained all four legs and credits them to her quick recovery and ability to return to her independent lifestyle. Heather learned early on that having her custom prostheses allowed her to return to doing the things that meant the most to her. Whether it was being able to paddle board again or wear high heels, these devices were key to Heather’s emotional and physical healing. But she recognized that the unusual circumstances and attention around the manner in which she became an amputee, in large part, are what got her those legs. Most people's amputations are not as highly publicized and people aren't aware that they may need help. The Heather Abbott Foundation was created to help other amputees like Heather thrive in their recovery and return to the life they love. Join us as Heather helps to “pay it forward.”'
Pretty amazing right? Attached below are a few examples of the life changing touch the Heather Abbott Foundation has already had during its few years of operation.
While never being known as a "runner" my motivation for running the 2017 Boston Marathon is pulled directly from Heather and other victims of the 2013 Marathon Bombing. In 2013 the Boston Marathon changed my life forever. As I found myself very close to the second of the two bombings that occurred on Boylston Street my role changed from onlooker to first responder in a matter of seconds. In the three years since meeting amputee victim Roseann Sdoia that day on the Boylston sidewalk I have formed life changing relationships with victims and fellow first responders. Personally, the Boston Marathon has taken on a new meaning of perseverance, determination, and resiliency through being able to closely observe and be a part of the rehabilitation process of Roseann Sdoia, Heather Abbott, and other amputees during their recovery. The will power and resolute attitude these individuals have shown in restoring their lives back to normalcy is simply put, inspiring, and what motivates me to conquer the 26.2 miles of the race including the infamous Newton Hills.
So at this point, I ask for everyone's help in reaching my fundraiser goal of $8,000 before the race date of April 17th, 2017. Stay tuned for fundraising events throughout the 6 month journey!
Thank you all for the support!
