THE STORY:

Mr. Ajit Thakur, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (blood cancer) on January 8th, 2015. This diagnosis required an immediate commencement of chemotherapy and subsequently, several weeks of hospitalization. He was admitted to Jupiter Hospital, Thane, (India) under the care of Dr. Niranjan Rathod, and later, Dr. Anil Kamat, two expert haemato-oncologists.

We have been fortunate to see my father show a good initial response to treatment. He has responded to medication to reduce the extent of the cancer as well as medication which addresses side effects of the strong chemotherapy drugs. However, for long term recovery, he has been advised several rounds of chemotherapy followed by bone marrow transplant.

We want to provide my father the necessary and complete treatment that results in total recovery. He has shown positive signs since his diagnosis and we want to make sure he continues along this path. At the same time, cancer treatment is prolonged, requires long periods of hospitalization, demands specialty care, and is very expensive as a result. We are a middle class family and such expenses are not borne lightly. Initially, we assumed that the savings at our disposal could be used to cover the costs for treatment. However, we are seeing a rapid rise in costs over time and disposable income is being rapidly used up.

We have a wonderful family and have been completely supportive and have contributed to coping with the costs. My mother has worked as a biology teacher for over 32 years at S.K.Somaiya Vinay Mandir Junior College in Mumbai and has recently retired in May 2014. My father is a 63 year old retired engineer who had been spending some part of his post-retirement life working at a workshop in Navi Mumbai. My sister is working in a startup and I am studying to complete my PhD, which imposes limits on our financial contribution.
