4 years ago, the brutal killing of a Fenger High School student by a mob of kids, virally spread on video around the world, caused international outrage and cast a negative light on both Fenger and Chicago. Fenger's principal, Liz Dozier, who started only weeks before the incident, tasked to turn the school around, began tackling their many challenges with amazing force and commitment to make Fenger a thriving & safe learning environment. She and her staff have been successful in turning the school around, however the support Fenger received for new programs in the aftermath of the killing was a 4 year grant that ended last year, and now the kids are at risk of things reverting back to the way it once was.
Restauranteur & Philanthropist Billy Dec has been involved in mentoring activities for Fenger students since volunteering as Principal For The Day after the fatal incident happened four years ago. After developing a stronger relationship with Principal Dozier and the kids over the years, and hearing more of their needs, Dec decided to engage the help of his friend Juanita Jordan who graduated from Fenger, to raise money in order to allow the kids the chance they so deserve. Dec & Jordan kicked off the effort with an event at Dec's restaurant where they raised over $70,000 in part with generous donations on this CrowdRise page from donations of any size from people like you.
