Greetings Family,

My studies begin tomorrow and I am so excited for this next chapter of my work and my life. It’s been almost 2 weeks and I’ve already gotten settled into my housing, joined some really dope organizations, learned the tube and made some new friends. I have never lived outside the east coast, so this is certainly a new adventure for me.

I have not forgotten the reason as to why I am here: to glean, to build with freedom fighters globally, to exchange, to research, to learn and to bring back. I have already been tasked with continuing the direct action/community organizing trainings I did in the states here with some local groups.

I have also not forgotten the reason as to how I got here. I’ve pulled you up in my spirit this week, and I’ve recalled my commitment to this work, and my studies, and to those who have helped me make it here. I've written your name down on a list and placed it over my desk as a loving reminder.

I'd love an occasional note or update from you, too! Please keep me in your thoughts, if there’s anything I can do for you, don’t hesitate to ask.

Peace family, Today I am p…

Peace family,

Today I am packing up my office at Equal Justice USA, an amazing organization (seriously, look them up!) Tomorrow I am heading to Chicago for a meeting with other activists, social justice advocates and direct service providers to talk about next steps with this movement, and then Friday will be my very last day with EJUSA.

I came to EJUSA a little over 3 years ago out of undergrad to work on repealing the death penalty through legislative state campaigns. I spent the day cleaning out my drawers and reflecting on how much I've grown in this place. I found old headlines from states I worked in, pictures, old conference pamphlets, and letters from incarcerated brothers and sisters from over the years. It is tough leaving my first job, but I'm enthusiastic about what's next.

I'll be teaching community organizing to girls this summer! It'll be the perfect way to prep for heading back into academia where I'll be a student again. I just wanted to take the time, as I continue reflecting and feeling grateful, to thank you again for being a huge part of this transition. I'm almost half way to my goal, and I couldn't have done any of this without you.

Love and appreciation,
Rell

Thank you so much for your generous offering towards my education. It truly means the world to have your support and encouragement. I started my process for my Student Visa this week, and it's because of your loving gift that this is possible.

I am the first in my family to attend college, and now Grad school. My nieces are making a "countdown calendar" for my departure and have even started to imagine what their goals may be- it's really special to witness. So I wanted to send you a thank you from them, and the rest of my family. We all appreciate the community support- I know I'll never forget it.

With love and gratitude,
